Berlin museum staff continue reviewing Jacobsen’s notes about the gut garments. One staff member reads a second translated entry aloud: “Pelerine-like coat made from gut or unbleached throats of seals. Presumably used for voyages in baidarki / 3-place kayaks. The same [coat] is ornamented with feathers on the lower part, the half has sewn on dyed guts as fringing. I have not seen such coats still in use. Text by Adrian Jacobsen ca. 1883.” Staff members reflect on Jacobsen’s belief that the longer cape was no longer in use at the time, but a shorter version continued to be worn during kayak travel.
