Hauke Ziessler asks what the catalog card says about the hair used in the gut hat. A Berlin Ethnological Museum staff member reads aloud Jacobsen’s description: “Cap or cap cover hollowly sewn from intestine, embellished with colorful cotton threads. The top is similar to the Chukchi and Koryaks with a circle made from leather, neatly embellished with sewn on hedgehog quills, likewise the lower brim is embellished with a sewn on leather band. This form of cap may have been used as a model for Russian sailor’s hats. The bonnet is also trimmed with long hair stitched off into the seams.” The card does not specify the type of hair used.
