John Johnson recalls Bill Smith's observation that if a technology worked well, it was adapted and spread throughout Alaska. Examining the hats of the qayakers on the model qayaq, Johnson notes that the notched top of one hat indicates a Tlingit chief, with each layer representing a potlatch hosted. He emphasizes how the Chugach people adopted southeastern styles.
