Living Our Cultures, Sharing Our Heritage: The First Peoples of Alaska

A published catalog of artifacts from around Alaska housed at various museums with accompanying descriptions of Alaska Native groups, created as a collaborative project between the Smithsonian, Arctic Studies Center, Anchorage Museum, and more.

This book is based on a collaborative exhibition created by Alaska Native communities, the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian, and the Anchorage Museum at the Rasmuson Center. The first section of the book is composed of overviews of various Alaska Native groups, identified in this book as Inupiaq, St. Lawrence Island Yupik, Yup'ik, Unangax, Sugpiaq, Athabascan, Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian. These overviews feature extended quotes directly from community members and a curated selection of museum artifacts that originate from the featured area of Alaska. Each item features a high quality photograph, the traditional name of the object, and a description of its traditional usage.
