The Red Cedar of Afognak: A Driftwood Journey


Based on stories told by Afognak Elders, this illustrated collection of traditional stories explores the significance of wood and natural forces/resources to Alutiiq communities. The book also includes Alutiiq vocabulary words that relate to the stories.

Based on a story by John P. Pestrikoff: The finding of a large driftwood log a long way inland, prompts an Alutiiq grandfather to tell two young boys about the geographic history of their area. Story set in islands off Alaska, in the modern era, i.e. - post-Exxon Valdez. Learn about : hearths, Talking Circles, nuna, tree rings, ocean currents and Pukilaaq Beach. 28 pages with lots of reference notes at end. Watercolour drawings animate text.
