William Smith: You need a ballistic tip to get it to penetrate such a big animal. Harpoons more for sea mammals, the tip would stick in and would separate from the spear. And the shaft would be attached to a float so it would drag and stop the animal coming away.

You don’t beat the fish to death but you cut the nerve and respect the animal so it dies quickly. Bad fishermen lost their life in the ocean when they disrespected nature.

Cordova had some violent wars and it was a big mixing pot of cultural groups. Back then all the cultural groups would fight each other and now we work together to fight for survival. Nuchek was a big trade center. Barrels of syrup were very popular to trade for skins at Nujek. John thinks it was molasses used to brew Alcohol. Each community (Eyak, Ahtna, Tlingit) had a certain time to trade at Nuchek to prevent fighting each other.
